product story
quilting happens within communities the world over and was introduced into our making community’s repertoire as a way of dealing with textiles scraps and reclaimed and donated fabrics, taking inspiration from the Amish tradition. A range of techniques and traditions are employed across the collection, including paper piecing, improvisational quilting and sashiko. Each cushion is unique and has its own story to tell through the Maker and the previous owner of the fabric; together the cushions are a symbol of activism – a fight for a community, led by stitch; this distinctiveness and collective activism are also features of quilting history. This project was led by textile artist Sara Kelly.
